Hype vs fact

I worked in broadcasting for 37 years and there used to be a position called "editor" whose job was to make sure that everything was factual and confirmed prior to being presented to the public.  Now, those editors have been eliminated and reports go straight to the audience.

Because you have reporters who often know little to nothing about the subject of their stories and are given only the same day to "turn" the story and are pressured by consultants to do ridiculous things to make stories more "compelling," you get news that really isn't or news that isn't quite accurate.  I've been the subject of news stories before, one written by a good friend, and each contained errors.  As a result of these factors, news hype is causing the public to ignore weather warnings.  I agree with Chris in Tampa.  Don't listen to the hype.  Do listen to the facts, especially from the meteorologists.
