El Nino was used to discuss a specific current off the coast of Peru that often resulted in long, drawn out International Law cases where fisherman argued over where they could or couldn't fish and confiscated fishing boats.

Somewhere...over time and through the use of the term by the media it has come to mean WARM WATER ANYWHERE IN THE PACIFIC and now has new sub-categories and nicknames for various sort of El Nino events.
Is this like coke or soda? Aspirin or Bayer?
I understand things progress over time and we understand more about it now than then but still... it's like screaming Shark on a beach in Cape Cod these days...
