Here's a Time mag story on the phytoplankton bloom on Alaska's north shore.

Couple of typos and poorly written sections.

1.  It's TO say it's rare . . .

3.  Not that the season would only last 3-4 weeks but once it starts it lasts an extra 3-4 weeks extending the season.  Solar inputs w/ spotless days compared to 1913 would argue IMHO for NO season whatsoever.  Just like 1914.  You can call it hostile conditions or shear or whatever you want to call it, but the non linear changes in cloud microphysics won't occur.  But with the changes to rivers and the changes to the atmosphere and ultimately the ocean with increases of CO2 particularly shift the ability, IMHO, for the earth to recharge itself and become favorable for tropical storms--the earth is more conductive.  The solar cycle is trending up not down, and the last pretty good spot, biggest in two years, gave us the C and D storms in the EPAC.  The Pacific High right now is baking.  It's so hot here on the left coast I cannot even explain it.  The Pacific high gives you the health of the electrics in the Pacific, IMHO, and it's going to produce productive electrics in the next few months.  The season isn't dead, I think it's just shifted.  Well see.  1914 is a control.  How 2009 turns out will give you a lot of big clues about what CO2 from human activity and dams and river changes mean to a living earth.
