If the online early reporting is true regarding some buildings collapsing even in Santiago, there are some major populated areas a third of the distance away from the epicenter. An 8.8 just 3 miles offshore of Chile. One small town, Pelluhue, Chile, with a population of nearly 6,500 according to Wikipedia is just about 7 miles away.
The depth is 21.7 miles, while the Haiti quake was 8.1 miles. I'm not sure how this one compares in regards to its depth/magnitude. |
