We have seen this before...a couple of times in 2004 with Wilma and a couple of other storms.  NHC and other agencies have conceded the last few years that they have a long way to go in the intensification part of a forecast.  However, they have gotten remarkedly better at track forcast within 48hrs  and sometime 72hrs.  The bad thing here it takes the media and the people the media are trying to reach a lot more time to react and digest quickly changing info. and what to do next.
