The thing that most alarmed me in Norcross's presentation just now was his remark that Irene is currently projected to make landfall on the northeast at high tide. He specifically said that this high tide will be "an astronomically high tide." I can think of more more dire scenario.
People up there need to understand that WATER is the thing to fear in this situation--not wind. Yes, the wind may well be quite bad, especially if Irene hits up there as a Cat 2. But many parts of the northeast have endured historic rainfall in the past few weeks, with New York having a current surplus of 10 inches. Compound that with this area's historic vulnerability to catastrophic storm surge and you have a deadly combination of flash flooding caused by brutal rainfall and a Cat 2 storm surge on top of it.
I know all about smug, jaded New Yorkers--I WAS one! Lived in Brooklyn most of my life and I remember well the sarcastic skepticism with which locals greeted the arrival of Gloria. But Gloria was a Cat 1 at landfall and it STRUCK AT LOW TIDE. BIG DIFFERENCE, folks! Take this seriously.
I would much rather get burned by another cry-wolf scenario than get drowned by the real deal. |
