As you know, that fire is burning underground in the peat bog material. When they dig it up, the fire flashes up. The only way to put it out is to flood the area...which Irene could do.
Lateral West (Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge): 6,004 acres at 20 percent contained. This fire is nine miles southeast of Suffolk so horrible smoke will blow over all of the cities with a south wind. |
