The synoptic pattern setting up to send Irene up the coast is pretty much the following: There is a powerful and intensifying trough digging in over the northeast that is forecast to hook down toward the Appalachians and pick tug Irene up the coast like a yo-yo. We also have rising or steadily high pressures over the west Atlantic, which seem poised to block Irene from recurving out to sea or at least farther away from the coast than some models indicate.

To me, those higher pressures over the Western Atlantic are the clincher--I agree with Jim that Irene seems destined to ride the coast up into New England, though I think models placing the center directly over NYC are biased to the west a bit. I think we'll see landfall somewhere between central and east Long Island with the possibility of Massachusetts (particularly Buzzard's Bay) and Rhode Island taking the brunt of the storm surge.
