Re:Use your Car GPS to find elevation

One of the things we played with over the summer was the elevation measurements of the GPS we had. Not all are as good as others but for the most part they are within a given deviation. Using one wit h a built in Barometric sensor that compares it the GPS satellite triangulation is best.

Here is a Link to a post on how to calibrate a Garmin for more precise measurement. Warning what is not discussed in this article is how an approaching severe weather system can effect the ability to calibrate these devices and the actual measurement. If the barometric pressure for a calibrated location is changing quickly it can impact the comparative measurement at the targeted location.

Having said that I am with Chris and say go with the evacuation maps. Keep an eye on the IKE numbers and regardless of the Saffir-Simpson number if the IKE surge/waves destructive potential number is higher than a 4 and your in yellow get out, especially if the storm makes landfall to the west of you. If you are clearly out of the evacuation zone don't leave unless instructed to do so as it jams up the roads for those that should leave, think RITA in Texas. IF landfall is to the east of you and your not in the yellows or green zone and Saffir Simpson scale number is low I would not loose sleep worrying about it.
