Irene is still a LARGE tropical cyclone with a minimum central pressure of 950 millibars. I understand there IS a difference between 942 and 950, but - believe me - if you get hit by the core of either one, it will be damaging if not destructive. The wind field is expanding which is causing the maximum wind speeds to decrease A LITTLE. Here are a few historical storms that made U.S. landfall with pressures around 950 mb:
King 1950 - 955 Edna 1954 - 954 Gracie - 1959 - 950 HIlda - 1964 - 950 Betsy - 1965 - 948 Beulah - 1967 - 950 Carmen - 1974 - 952 Eloise - 1975 - 955 Frederic - 1979 - 946 Diana - 1984 - 949 Fran - 1996 -954 Floyd - 1999 - 956 Ivan - 2004 - 946 Dennis - 2005 - 946 Wilma - 2005 - 950
I'm sure anyone that experienced these storms has not forgotten them. Don't let your guard down if you are in the path of this storm!
