If we have more of these storms that kind of break the mold, we might need some alternatives. The Saffir-Simpson scale will not go way though, it is just too simple. People can understand it. Every alternative that gives a better idea of the storm gets complex and you really can't understand how it works. But, hardly anyone really understands exactly how earthquakes are rated, you just hear a headline number, so maybe if the NHC eventually just had a surge destruction potential rating, without getting into the science behind it to keep it simple, it could work. But having two numbers does get a little confusing. Irene is a 2 on the SS scale but perhaps a 4 in terms of surge. Then would you call it a major hurricane? I do like the fact that the SS scale is now just for wind. That needed to happen.
