LOL! Yes, I remember well, Target. I think this storm is a reminder that no automatic correlation exists between pressure and wind speed. How many times have we seen pressure drop in a given storm and were told by forecasters that the winds would "catch up" but they never do? This has been a rather common occurrence in recent years, and perhaps more so with storms of great size like Irene, Katrina, Ivan, Wilma, etc.
We should probably stop seeing baromertric pressure and wind speeds within the same context and rather observe and understand each individual phenomenon on its own. For instance, the SDP scale Chris has been touting illustrates that pressure is a more critical factor to storm surge than wind speeds (even though I remain skeptical of that particular scale). The category of the storm is largely irrelevant to the magnitude of the storm surge it generates. |
