If you have a broad continental shelf that extends very far from the coastline (like alot of the east coast) then the ocean depth in this area is significantly less than in the open atlantic; hence there's not as *much* warm water/energy stored in these waters to fuel tropical systems. I know data assimilation for currents within oceans is just no where near where we would wish. We can only go by what physics tells us within a margin of error.

Great point though!

It's not often when you get a storm to take such a track. Could be another inhibiting factor in Irene's potential; however we'd have to look at topography maps and really compare.

Like Target said let's save that for another day! LOL That's a mim research project!
