And don't be afraid to ... ask ... amateurs (who don't officially know anything) in meaningful discussion either.
I think I can speak for some of us hurricane geeks here when I say we love to talk about the most intricate details of hurricane dynamics.
I would just love to spend hours talking about how Irene could be a Cat 5 had this been 2085 and sea temps were 5F higher, but jim might not appreciate that... So we mustn't give it a further thought right now.
The shallow water may have less cold water below it, but it has less potential warm water also.
A gradual transition from deep water to shallow water would likely yield larger surge.
