Checking In after Irene

Yippee! Emerald Isle is okay, with just a few trees down, no flooding, and no more rain/wind. We lost our electricity at 11 Saturday morning, and just got it back about an hour ago. That was super fast, and we are so appreciative of those men and women who get out to repair the power lines. What wonderful souls they are.
EI is at one end of our island with about 3 towns in between. Atlantic Beach, at the other end, did not fair as well. The pics we've seen recently show tons of flooding, but it is a much flatter beach than we are. There are also business signs down, debris blown around, etc.... They seem to have a lot of damage from trees, as well. They have fewer trees, less vegetation than we do, too. I"m a firm believer in minimal displacement of natural vegetation when areas are developed, especially in coastal areas. EI has fared well due to their planning on this. For instance, at the end of our street is one of the tallest dunes around. Also, if you walked outside of our home, you wouldn't know you are even at the beach by just looking around. The lot is heavily wooded with natural vegetation all around, as are our neighbors. We really believe we're protected more than others who cleared lots, building homes with flat manicured lawns, and no natural protection. EI put an end to that sort of development about 35 years ago, and it's paid off handsomely.
Inland NC adjacent to the coast has also fared poorly, with heavy flooding and wind damage. It will take a while for lives to get back to normal for those areas.
Hope everyone on the board is okay. Just wanted to let yall know we're still here, no worse for the wear. We're sending tons of positive energy and prayers to those still dealing with Irene, and those yet to be affected. I hope the damage will be minimal. |
