No they don't.
Regardless of what a lot of national new media have said, Hatteras did not "dodge a bullet" wiht Irene. The villages north of Avon on the island were hit very hard. Residents are just now being allowed to return, starting tomorrow and staggered by village and alphabetically. If another one is coming, especially after having to spend more than a week off the island with no reentry (lots of hotel bills and food while you aren't making any money at the same time) I would venture to say that 90% of those who are just now getting to go home...will NOT leave this time and that could be bad.
The area around Rodanthe/Waves/Salvo ( we call it the tri-villages) can not handle any more flooding. The new inlet that was cut by Irene at the far north of the island is in the works for a temporary bridge (Mabry Bridge) while the environmentalists and the county/state fight it out over what to do and another big blow will make the inlet that much wider and deeper and possibly put a kink in the temporary bridge plans.
What a mess. Everyone blow to the east really hard :) |
