As a retired Forester of 32 years one of my main responsibilities was Fire Suppression . Here in the coastal plain of South Carolina we are at risk every spring for severe wildfires. The coastal plains of North Carolina....Georgia....and the entire state of Florida are at particular risk each year during the spring and early summer also.
Wildfires can indeed make their own weather....especially winds. Now the fire- nado that was witnessed at the Carr fire....I never witnessed anything of this scale.
However I have witnessed these on a smaller scale. We called these fire devils. On larger fires I have witnessed these fire devils crossing roadways carrying large burning logs as well as other burning debris. This caused the fire to "spot" well ahead of itself growing tremendously in size in a short period of time.
