Some pictures of the SFMR instrument are here on the NOAA P-3: http://www.aoml.noaa.gov/hrd/about_hrd/HRD-P3_sfmr.html
It's rather large, at least as of then. I assume it is still the same. So there wouldn't be anything on the Coyote that could estimate the surface winds.
This site mentions they have been as low as 400 feet: http://www.aoml.noaa.gov/keynotes/keynotes_0116_coyoteupgrades.html
"The platform was tested in a major hurricane for the first time during the 2014 Atlantic hurricane season when researchers flew multiple Coyote missions into Hurricane Edouard at controlled altitudes as low as 400 feet, providing NOAA with real-time data on the storms structure."
I assume in this storm it just didn't survive. Maybe they would have after awhile if it had survived. Or maybe they intended to keep it at that level. Maybe in a strong storm they worry about downdrafts? Maybe they want a little room to recover if possible? I don't know. |
