I assume they got more and I just don't have that paperwork. It couldn't have been much, but at the very least for medical bills. They both had good jobs at the time that they eventually retired from so I assume they probably had insurance at that time too. But with something like that, with the right lawyer, you're right, it would be different today. Though in their case I don't think it had any long term impacts that I ever heard of. (my grandmother was seriously injured, but she lived to 100) You have had serious complications. So while in the case of my grandparents there would have been an at fault party with a lot of money (local government), you would deserve much more since you've had very serious complications. (though I assume the party at fault in your case wasn't driving on behalf of a business at the time, so it wouldn't be a party with as much money as a business or government) But hopefully you can get a fair amount nonetheless, perhaps in part due to their insurance.

One thing I forgot was that of course the lawyer gets a big piece of a settlement. So you need to make sure that you know what that final amount that you get would be. (after your lawyers get paid from the settlement) And I am going to assume that you don't get taxed on a settlement because that would just be crazy. I know some lawyers around here on TV, when it comes to injuries I think, often advertise you don't have to pay unless they win. They would get paid a bunch out of a settlement. You just want to make sure that the amount you actually get in the end is fair. A real quick Google search says they might take around 30 to 40% on average, depending on things such as the settlement amount and whether it goes to trial.
