I just wrote this to the management company and president of my neighborhood (my next door neighbor who I can hopefully catch home too):
Front entrance to Pelican Island floods easily
If the current forecast holds, and doesn't get any worse, this is still forecast to bring the highest surge our area has experienced since Pelican Island has existed. The front entrance floods completely, to become impassable, before you can even notice any of the other roads having seawater rising on it. It floods easily in a tropical storm if it makes landfall north of the Bay.
I think a notice should go out about that. With the forecast storm surge, and perhaps some waves on top, there is a reasonable chance that some older homes especially at a lower elevation will get some water in them. But long before that happens, or any of the roads flood from the rising tide, the front entrance will be impassable by vehicle.
In a previous storm a Pelican Island resident ended up in a ditch in the floodwaters. The water could potentially be at least several feet deeper this time around.
I got the first email sent an hour ago, but I think a more specific one tailored to our particular vulnerability, the front entrance, should be sent out. By the time you notice the water too high in the canal, it can already be too late to evacuate. And interior lots can't easily see the water in the canal either, so I don't want them to wait too long to evacuate either. If the email is not sent today, then I would hope something goes out about it Wednesday if that happens to be when evacuation orders are issued for our area.
