when our last home flooded

1st time, we left so weren't there overnight in flood waters, water barely covered to floor, came up during the day
2nd time, we slept in the unfinished attic, water came up at dark - it was awful & very scary, kids were little + 1 dog + 1 snake - water was 8-10 inches deep
we used doors taken off the hinge pins to lay across our galley-style kitchen counters & give more area to set things up from the floor
we used old paint cans & cement blocks to lift up our leather couch set - it turned out to be just high enough, by maybe an inch
our king-size sleigh bed was toast, no lifting that, much too heavy, but the stuff we piled on top of it was ok
kids had chunky heavy wood bunkbeds, wood dried & were just fine (still have 1 twin bed from it)
our washer, dryer & fridge were ok once they dried out, I was amazed - definitely had to be sanitized, but worked well & no mold after cleaning/disinfecting
tearing out sheetrock & insulation was a job from hell...
we had recently remodeled a bit, painted & new carpet - it all got torn out, put in tile everywhere, new cabinets
3rd time - we sold to FEMA/Flood Control Distict & moved here - it was heart-wrenching seeing it torn down, as well as neighbors' & friends' homes
I have ptsd just thinking about it |
