Commander Fleet Activities Okinawa

Good evening, Okinawa! OK, apparently there was a massive run on Dunkin Doughnuts this morning, and I'm starting to get thank you notes from the Jenny Craig Company. Henceforward, Super Typhoon Sanba will be known as a "Spinach Quiche Typhoon."

Sanba is chika-chika-booming our way right now as you can see from this great image provided by the Naval Research Laboratory. This "rolling spinach quiche of doom" is heading North at about nine knots and shows no signs of slowing down or changing course. Whoever has the typhoon magnet turned on - PULL THE PLUG; we're now showing a closest-point-of-approach on Sunday morning at - wait for it - EIGHT MILES. And that's with an eye that's 13 miles across; wide enough that I doubt I could walk across it even if I hadn't eaten all those doughnuts. ;)

We're still in Tropical Cyclone Condition of Readiness 3, but will no doubt be in TCCOR 2 by morning. For those of you flying Typhoon Airlines for the fi
rst time, TCCOR 2 means we're expecting 50-knot winds within 24 hours. SO, if we hit TCCOR 2 in the morning at, say, 0300 tomorrow, we'll be expecting our first taste of 50-knot winds around 0300 on Sunday. Too much math? Thought so. Here's something simpler: BIG STORM COMING. TAKE THE BOUNCY HOUSE DOWN!! FIND THE FLASHLIGHT!!! STOCK UP ON DOUGHNUTS!!

Ooops.

This IS a big storm, folks, no kidding, and it will pass very close on the most dangerous side of the island. PLEASE take it seriously and get anything that might turn into a Sanba-propelled projectile tied down or put away. There's a pretty good chance we'll see power outages in some places, so make sure you've got flashlights and your cell phones are charged - they may still work even if there's no power in your residence. And don't worry too much; the house you're in is SOLID - it may look like a parking garage without the charm, but it IS build to withstand serious winds. You'll be fine. I'll let you know how things are looking in the morning. Stay safe, stay tuned! Stormy
