Sandy storm surge could be historic

God I hate getting wrapped up in the hype of another hurricane bound for the northeast, but from everything I am seeing, and in particular this morning's NHC discussion, it really does seem as though extratropical transition and the upper-level dynamics that will result from Sandy's interaction with the low that will pull it towards the east coast will allow--even force--Sandy to maintain a minimum central pressure below 970 mb.

Someone please correct me if I am out of line here, but that appears to me to be what we're going to see as this system moves inland.

If we see a 960-970 mb storm move into the east coast, I think storm surge could prove to be historic in the area the system directly impacts. When you combine that kind of barometric pressure with the absolutely massive size of this still-growing storm, I don't see how you have anything other than severe coastal storm surge.
