Social media is definitely a great way to get good and bad information. You can follow people that usually know what they're talking about, but then sometimes you'll get subjected to people who most definitely don't. I can see that for a lot of people, it gets confusing which is which. I try to research people's backgrounds before I follow them and before I share anything from them. Of course sometimes those people might get fooled by something, so it's a minefield of bad information sometimes.

I try to do a mix with the information I post here. It's hard with Irma. I want people to listen to the NHC ultimately, but I do want to add other information to add to the discussion. It's just hard with long range models, especially now that both the GFS and Euro are in range to show impacts to the U.S. mainland. There's great information out there, but it's hard to keep reminding people it's too far out to know specific impacts. It gets to be a broken record, but then again I know there's many more people here, just like on Twitter or Facebook, that aren't as familiar with various things, such as models. They don't post, they just view things. So I try to emphasize uncertainty.

This storm has brought out an insane amount of bad information and hype, I guess because of Harvey. Some people are trying to take advantage of the situation. There's an increasing threat to land areas, but if the current level of hype was the same for every storm up until about this point, some people would eventually stop paying attention to anything. I can't wait for some recon data in the models, especially the NOAA G-IV by late Monday night probably, then we should get a better sense of where it's going long term. Until then, social media is going to be all over the place as there isn't really anything to say other than it's too early to know about U.S. mainland impacts and for some people that isn't good enough. They want something, even if it's not based on logic.
