We also have seen storms cross the heart of that Island and regenerate into major hurricanes that ultimately make landfall in the U.S., as was the case with Hurricane Jeanne in 2004. Have to say, for what it is worth, that I see very little sign in the models that Irma ever will give Hispaniola more than a brush as it heads into the Bahamas. In the last couple hours Irma's wsw jog appears to have given way to a westward jog. That may be temporary or the wsw movement may be done for good. If the latter, then in my amateur opinion there is no way this thing threatens Hispaniola and things look much better for everyone west of this storm.
