Warm means more conductive BUT

One way to think about it, is that the warmer the oceans are the more conductive they are.  Therefore, when lightning occurs in the Americas charges can more easily pattern in couplings above the warm anomalies, and that figures on whether or not the explosive 'Walker circulations' can occur or not, which then causes the water to move counter to the trades and build an El Nino.  BUT because space weather hasn't exactly coorperated with the spotless days, upper atmospheric conditions for couplings have been terrible--worst conditions since 1913 leading into the very slow 1914 season.  BTW there have been El Nino years that still produce tropical storms--it's just that it's anti correlated, not prohibated.  The interesting question will be will the SSTs now relatively cool, especially as they are tied to wind patterns and not SSTs, and by the fall when we might have had an El Nino if the pattern was sustained that it won't come about.

This is such an interesting year to study in conjunction with the spotless sun . . .
