I posted an article covering the same subject about a month ago. Its already been established that there is a wide variable when it comes to lightning activity in tropical weather. However, as the article says, a sharp spike in lightning activity near the core of an already well-established tropical system (full blown hurricane) seems to indicate the beginning of a phase of intensification. Whats good about this is that its a relatively easy phenomenon to track. The forces which combine to produce intensification or not well understood. So although the lightning activity might not give us a much better idea about the causes of intensification, it is something that can be monitored on a real time basis, and might be useful in forecasting intensification (regardless of whether we truly understand all of the dynamics involved). |
