France, via their settlement in Jacksonville, wanted to gain power in Florida so they set out to attack the Spanish settlement in St. Augustine. At the same time, St. Augustine set out to attack Jacksonville.

The French travelled by sea; the Spanish by land. A hurricane settled that one - and Florida remained Spanish.
