If I can recall my history somewhat properly - the French tried to sneak their fleet down the coast and were on their way to St. Augustine when a hurricane passed by offshore.
The storm drove the French fleet onto the coast where they were beached (wrecked) and while the troops were recouperating from the storm drama (sans much of their equipment) - the Spanish marched northwards and took Jacksonville.
I believe that's it in a nutshell.
