I regularly go to the jersey shore and the hamptons. Most people who go to the shore know its always a possibility. Even the commuters know there is a reason that every single road out of these places have tons of signs up that say "coastal evacuation route". The locals respect the oceans even more cause they get hit in the winter with noreasters and see some of it possible force every year. However, direct hits of hurricanes (especially with majors, which hopefully irene wont be when she gets up here) happens much less frequently in the north than in the south. That why they are usually seen as more of a "southern" thing by most people.

Also, I think some of the issue is that there are quite a few "near misses" like earl last year, where we will be in the cone and then get nothing but a sea breeze, some clouds and huge waves and rip tides. If it hits direct on NYC and the jersey coast I hope people take the warnings seriously but even very small shifts in such a densely populated area can have tremendous implications. Many people in NYC wont realize what the insane storm surge gianmarc talked about is capable of doing unless its heavily advertised. Evacuation will be a nightmare if the track doesn't shift.
