Don't forget to have a landline phone that doesn't require power, just a phone connection. Cell towers will be down or over capacity. If you have an old-fashioned phone that just needs to plug into the phone socket you may be in luck and have at least some phone service. Also, long distance lines are sometimes better preserved than local lines. Designate a friend or relative outside of the affected area to be your contact. Keep your contact as up to date as possible and have your loved ones call her/him for info and leave messages for you. That cuts down on the phone calls (and the attendant frustration when they can't get through) and frees you for your post-storm tasks.
