Shear, dry air taking their toll

I've seen tropical storms that looked more formidable than this, now. The fleeting blow-up of colder cloud tops we saw earlier was a false alarm. This storm is now struggling mightily against dry air and shear. For my money, this is a Cat 1 if ever there was one. This is good news for NC and the northeast, but the remaining variable is storm surge--how far will the surge exceed the storm's category? That could be the potentially devastating surprise Irene has in store . . .
