Deepening is out of the question at this point. As jim noted, the storm is now over the warmest water it will ever see, and yet we see precisely the opposite of deepeing. The question is not whether it will strengthen; the question is how long it will sustain Cat 2 intensity. That will have huge implications on the magnitude of surge in the northeast. Judging from toda's significant rise in pressure and Irene's steadily deteriorating satelite appearance, I think NHC will downgrade to Cat one by 11 p.m.
