Yes, Chris, of course, a big yes to everything you said -- and even a Cat. 3 can be devastating, both at the coast and inland, as we found out here with Hurricane Ivan in 2004. But there's no getting around the fact that thoughts of a Cat. 5 can be particularly panic-inducing, and I just hate to see a certain hysteria about that nurtured where it doesn't need to be.
Your advice is solid -- just get out of Dodge if you're asked to go, whether under mandatory evacuation or otherwise, and the earlier the better, not only because of traffic, but also considering availability of lodging if, say, you don't have family or friends to stay with out of harm's way. (We always make reservations days in advance if a storm even looks as if it might hit here - hotels fill up fast when thousands are evacuating. Cancellation policies are often stricter than they used to be these days, tho, so just be informed.) |
