Question for JAC and anyone else with thoughts of the geological kind

Okay, this is as simplistic as it gets so am dumming this question down and asking for a simple,

yes, possible
no
could be

I had a great teacher in geology who was good at making everything very simple, wish he was around, wish I remembered his name :( so I could email him...

Plate Tectonics ?

Say you have a tidal wave of any kind...the sea goes out, pulls away and then roars in

The Quake was caused simplistically because the Pacific Plate slammed into it... and under, etc...

Where was the energy coming from...

Just as the tidal wave moves away from the Quake taking with it energy across the ocean to South America.. California, etc

What direction did the energy from the Quake come from that slammed it into that part of the fault...

talking direction as in hurricane terms... from the wsw?

So, could a constant small set of movements in America... butterfly like chaos theory, shove things about until something snaps?

And, would that not create a need to push energy back, much the way the tsunami went backwards...

Would it be more likely to assume that energy came from the East...moving west or wnw or would this be rearranging of status quo after the New Zealand Quake and if you had two equal size quakes on one side of the earth would you not need readjustment on the other side to the East where the original energy may have come.

if you know what I mean...

Thanks..
