The energy builds up over time Bobbi. I would have to look up exactly what time of plate interaction it is (subduction, convergence, etc) as I don't know off the top of my head but the enrgy is always there and builds up over time untill some threshold is met which then the energy must be released as the qauke occurs. The "source" of this energy is the transference of conduction as the inner molten core radiates heat it causes "bubbles" if you will, not bubbles isn't a good way of saying it... uh kinda like when water boils? That energy then is transfered to the lithosphere in which it creates a net force on some plate over it and then has to be dispersed and hits as P & S waves (vibnrations) which we in turn then feel as an "earthqauke"

God I hope that helps. I may have confused myself. This was all off memory so I may be wrong here and there. It's been about 4 years since I took that course.
