Hurricane amnesia

You nailed it.  Way too many people look at the models and don't understand what the whole suite means.  It's scary what people who do not understand what they mean and only focus on the line.  This is what happened in SW Florida with Charley.  Back then the NHC had a cone with a line in the middle.  Everyone one focused on the line which is why NHC did away with it.

I work on Fort Myers Beach and all day everyone was talking about how the models have it west o the island.  I was in a store and someone asked me how it looked.  I said that it was still up in the air and the models shifted a bit east again. She replied that the hurricane symbols showed it west so it would be ok.

I asked if we were still in the cone.

She said yes.

I said "I have one word for you: Charley"

She had a stunned look on her face.

Amnesia....

These people do not understand how hurricanes work and as canetrakker correctly points out, the local NWS offices do not help with a vague forecast.

Later someone asked what was going to happen and I told here to imagine the worst thing that could happen and plan for that.  Anything less would be a nice surprise.  She liked that idea.
