Re: Bandwidth - O/T

Traffic on his site is astronomical. The amount of bandwidth he must use to serve all those images must be incredible.

On my site I use mapping from other providers and display text data in it, with very little actual imagery other than some icons, so in addition to having dramatically less traffic, I use a lot less bandwidth per person. I wouldn't be surprised if his site uses a few thousand times the amount of bandwidth mine does. Maybe more. My host's server is so old that statistics that used to run on it failed years ago so I don't know how many people really visit.

I only get about 28,000 free Google Maps map loads on desktop devices each month. (mobile views are free) I have to set a quota of 900 map loads per day so I don't get charged. I see I have used up that 900 each day since August 17th. After that point people get a message on the Google map about it being for developmental purposes. If you ever see that on the model plots, that's why. I apply to Google each time as a crisis responder so that the Google model plots on my site and at HurricaneCity can continue without that message without getting charged. If you fail to set a quota, and someone on social media links to your map and the post becomes popular, it could cost you hundreds of dollars potentially. Google has always approved my application in the past and I assume they will again. Until then, I have to see how high I can set the daily quota through the end of the month so I don't get charged. Eventually I will switch to ArcGIS, which I have for some of the heavy traffic maps that used to get tens of thousands of map loads over just a few days when they were using Google Maps. I switched because ArcGIS doesn't currently charge. It's just a lot of work to switch from one to the other, so it's not something I have gotten to yet. Maybe next year.

Edit: I submitted the application for additional credits from Google at 9:19pm and they approved me at 12:03am, less than three hours. I asked for credits of $250.00 each month for two months and they accidentally did it for $2,500 each month through the end of October. I'll take it. It's not actually money, just credit for using maps. After about 28,000 desktop dynamic map loads which are free (worth $200), Google then charges $0.007 (7/10ths of a cent) per map load after that. It adds up. Mobile device map loads are free.
