That too makes sense.  Remember that the ionosphere heats up and expands to almost 150 miles up with the sun's energy and then shrinks back down at night.  This is precisely why AM stations from long distances come in so clear at night.

There was a study that came out about 10 years ago when I first started to suspect that electrics was behind climate change that compared radio broadcast tapes from the past 50 years or so.  What they were was recordings from a radio station a known distance away.  The signal from the station both goes directly to the receiving end and then also bounced off the ionosphere and down to the receiver.  Therefore, by measuring the echo you could pick up a change in the ionosphere.  What was learned is that the ionosphere had changed about 5 miles in the past 35 years of radio recordings!  I might be able to find that link for you if you want it but I will have to dig.
