At the same time though Jim you have to admit that ULLs and troughs are awfully abundant for a "weak" El Nino, which leads me to wonder whether Nino zone SSTs alone are the only measurement of a given El Nino's potency? I have no idea what other indicators we might use to gauge a given El Nino's strength, but seems to me there's a gap between the magnitude of this El Nino on paper and its effects on the 2009 Atlantic Hurricane Season.

If we go by SSTs alone, though, yes--this is a comparatively mild El Nino.
