When Andrew hit Florida, I was in Englewood, FL on the west caost and I was a high school senior living by myself in a small house with a view of Lemon Bay.  My mom was paying for my rent and such . . . my dream was to go to Florida State to become a (go figure) meteorologist.  Anyhow, she started friving home to Ohio in her motorhome on 8/23/92, and got caught in evacuation traffic on I - 75.  She left in the morning and in about 6 hours had made it to Tampa.  This was when she kept hearing things on the radio about how terrible Andrew would be and decided to make her way back to take me north with her.  Well, she got back around 5:30 and I had dinner made and was just sitting down to eat.  There was enough for her to eat with me and so we ate together and talked.  She saw how I had everything under control and wasn't scared and left again after dinner.  Then on the 24th, where I was at, we got a little drizzle and a some breeze but nothing of consequense.  

I remember for weeks afterwards on Channel 1 (news station they play in high school classrooms) the devestation in Florida and Louisiana and considering myself very lucky.  I mean after all, that was really the 3rd tropical storm or hurricane I remember (Hugo in 1989 and TS Marco in 1990)
