Earl...Hurricane Watch...little sense of urgency

This situation in SE VA this am is interesting and concerning. Because this is a 'going by' type storm, there does not seem to be a sense of urgency in preparation for the general population that is now under a Hurricane Watch here. I hear 'nah - it won't hit us' comments frequently. Or 'all we will get is beach erosion and a bit of rain'.  Visitors to the shoreline tourist communities are staying unless the mandatory evacs are ordered. That do not seem to realize that flooding could be a real problem here too.

As a disaster nurse, that is worrisome. I do trust the NHC, but the potential for a different scenario is certainly a 12% possibility. Every am now for a few days we have awaken to a 'lttle bit of shift to the west' track.  There is not a lot of wiggle room left for another wake up or two!

Don't like games of chance when the stakes are so high.

Is this the same attitude in other areas of the watch?
