You summed up my feelings exactly. My whole life I've always been fascinated with extreme weather, from noreasters to hurricanes. Im from Jersey 20 minutes out of the city, now live in Manhattan, and go to the jersey shore and hamptons every summer. I have a summer house on the jersey shore (manasquan) 1 block from the beach. And the town had flooding LAST WEEK. Spending so much of my life on the beach I've always wondered what would happen if "the big one" hit, but really focused more on blizzards and noreasters because thats all I've ever seen.

Now that we are entering the three day cone it's almost unbeliveable that we could get a 100 year or even 500 year flood with a direct hit. 13 inches of rain alone on top of 10 + inches over average for the month already. Plus the tidal and coastal flooding...ive been calling and sending emails to all my friends and family to make sure they are safe and prepared. The media is starting to jack things up around here and scare people but I am very worried that not everyone will take this seriously. So many are in the evacuation zones and I've heard "the weathermen are always wrong, you're crazy, and the hurricane will turn like always" many times over the past few days.

Not exactly one hundred percent accurate but i did find the Mega Disasters on a Cat 3 storm hitting NYC that the history channel aired a couple years ago. Obviously Irene is not a cat 3 but her large size and high tide potential landfall make some things in this video seem very real.
