I guess they still have more work to do on it, but it will continue to be the way it is.

I was watching some of this YouTube video:

NWS Webinar on Updated NEXRAD Radar Webpage:

27:16 and forward they answer questions.

There's no going back to what they had. I forget what was said specifically in regard to a question about whether a specific image type would still be available with the older scale, but the radar doesn't create the product imagery it used to.

Downloading a loop of the radar from a specific timeframe is something that will be added in the future. It's been a popular feature request.

The "lite" imagery will stick around:

https://radar.weather.gov/ridge/lite/

That will be used on the webpages for most forecast offices. It's just a GIF loop though, or the most recent 10 images from the radar that you can download.

You can see the animated GIF loop on the Mobile forecast office page at the bottom:

https://www.weather.gov/mob/

But clicking the thumbnail takes you to the new GIS display.

I posted these in another post, but here they are again:

Elgin AFB:

Tallahassee:

In the new GIS display, in the future you should be able to pause a loop and go back and forth with it. (again, not within that simple imagery, talking about the new display) Someone asked about controlling the looping speed, and he said that, so I don't know if the ability to change the speed of the loop will be available. He said that is added into a future release that will come out in either January or February, but then also said it's in the todo list for a future release, so I wouldn't count on that in a few months.

The person in the webinar also said that they thought they put the system through an automated load test. This was uploaded to YouTube on December 4th. I'm going to go with a no on that one, or somebody really messed up.

The videos here:

And this specific video:

Should help people, but it's still really complex for people to use. Obviously until they get the ability to handle more of a load on their servers, the entire new radar display is useless. And even then, I think people are going to want to find alternatives. Maybe over time it will get a little better, but it's always going to be basically the same thing that some of us don't like about it. They could have kept both around if they really wanted to. Oh well.
