Daniel in 2023 around the Mediterranean is a reminder again that the Mediterranean basin should have an official agency designated by the WMO to be in charge of tropical cyclones.
Some previous articles this year from them:
2023 was Earth's hottest year on record: https://yaleclimateconnections.org/2024/01/2023-was-earths-hottest-year-on-record/
U.S. billion-dollar weather disasters set an all-time record in 2023, with 28: https://yaleclimateconnections.org/2024/01/u-s-billion-dollar-weather-disasters-set-an-all-time-record-in-2023-with-28/
In extreme weather news, I have a lot of family in southern Tennessee. One of the towns there hit -13F, one degree off their all time record of -14F. My aunt had snow that was nearly knee deep before that. (She lives in a between two hills so I don't know how much drifting there would be) They all did fine. I'm surprised the power held up. The Tennessee Valley Authority had record power usage that morning.
And out of curiosity, has anyone noticed a lack of lizards around Tampa, or in areas that haven't seen freezing temperatures, but where it has been cooler than normal at times and not sunny? Usually, every time I walk outside I dodge lizards. Or something they dodge me. They are always on or darting across sidewalks. But I noticed not lately. Sometimes after a freeze they unfortunately don't survive, but we haven't even hit the 30s yet. I looked online for stuff in general about lizards and they don't like the cold, they might not come out or might even group together when it is colder, waiting to sun themselves on a warmer day. I assume, but don't know, that's why they are missing all of a sudden. We've had some cooler stretches for longer periods, as well as a very little sun lately. It's not cold, but cool. I think I saw on the news a few nights ago that El Nino is brining us more clouds.
I Googled and found this article for the Naples area from a week ago: https://www.naplesnews.com/story/weather/2024/01/12/florida-national-weather-service-data-reveals-2024-is-not-so-sunny/72188716007/
Maybe the lizards are protesting our lack of sun. If so, I'm with them. |
