Re: SCN25-21: Changes to National Weather Service (NWS) Shapefiles per Executive Order 14172: Effective February 24, 2025

I was wondering about NOAA's basemaps and I looked up to see if ArcGIS (Esri) has made changes yet, as NOAA uses them in some areas of their site. I see some new maps are available at ArcGIS with Gulf of America as of around February 21st. (though I only looked in two places on NOAA's site and it wasn't updated yet where I looked, though it is only a matter of time) I don't see the older ones updated though on my site or at HurricaneCity and I hope that remains the case.

I think given they are a mapping company they'll probably give the option. It seems like they have U.S. editions. I just want to make sure they don't get used accidentally.

If anything changes, I'll look at map basemaps there that don't have it.

I have removed Google Maps from my site. My site will no longer have those model plots until I create a new map, likely using ArcGIS. Maybe I'll have it this year at some point, at least something simple. I'm working on some layout stuff right now and then in a few weeks perhaps I'll start on the map.

For now they'll remain at HurricaneCity, but we'll remove them there as soon as I finish the map. The main reason had to do with pricing changes starting March 1st with Google. Rather than 28,500 dynamic map loads free per month it is now 10,000. That's too few for my site when a storm is threatening. The political reasons relating to Google were the last straw and is why I pulled them now rather than wait.

People can still download the Google Earth model files, so it's not like I can get away from them completely, though you don't have to display labels in that program if you don't want to. I didn't like that Google Maps was mandating it for U.S. users.

It's sad that all this is being done, but they are government employees doing their job, and they might still be at risk of being fired by a person who is the true one that doesn't know what he's doing. (and yet doesn't have the power to fire people and yet does, because that's how broken everything is)
