Yes, there is risk in all things, but how about relative return on that investment?  The truth is that there is simply very little long term energy gain by drilling off Florida's Gulf Coast.

As far as the risks being small, just like a major hurricane in an otherwise quiet season it only takes one major spill to ruin beaches for a very long time, and in some cases damage is virtually irreversible, as we learned from Exxon-Valdez.  This accident could have been another biggie, though so far it appears we've been more than fortunate in that no oil seems to be leaking from the well head.

Still, to quote Senator Nelson today,""The tragedy off the coast of Louisiana shows we need to be asking a lot more tough questions of big oil. I think we need to look back over 10 years or so to see if the record denies the industry's claims about safety and technology."

I concur.  The problem is this:  no matter the advances in technology, safety training, etc., there is no way to permanently erase the human error factor -- and that's the operative element in most of the accidents in this industry.
