Against the cone

I personally HATE the cone. There are three reasons for this
1. A TC will track outside of the cone 1/3 of the time. Therefore, the cone does not convey forecast uncertainty
2. The cone is the same for all storms. The forecast uncertainty is not the same for all storms.
3. A TC can remain within the cone, yet areas outside of the cone can still get hurricane force winds.
I'd perfer the wind speed probabilities (and have them ensemble based, not statistically based) |
