Temperature charts...trend fluctuations...etc, remind me of the stock market. One of the cardinal rules of stock trading is; "don't fight the trend" - yet people do it all the time.
Let a stock reverse its trend for a few days then watch the traders...all in panic over a minor alteration of the dominant trend - but the dominant trend almost invariably returns.
I'm 57, I've seen a slight warming and a slight sea-level rise in the Mid-Atlantic during my lifetime. The Chesapeake Bay is ever-so-slowly but steadily swallowing up land and our barrier islands need constant beach replenishment which was not the case during my youth. But the process is so slow...one doesn't really notice it unless one has been absent a while.
The point of all this is that the dominant trend is one of warming and sea-level rise. I can't honestly say I know why; and at my age - I can't say I care all that much about it (so shoot me.) I do remember discussing this possibility back in high school (1960s), and I do remember well in 1980 saying to friends: "we should have the answers by 2000."
Well, now we're nearing 2010 and I accept global warming. Can't say I know why it's happening - but I accept it nonetheless. The best I can do is just kick back and watch the rest of you debate it - and hopefully by 2020 we can all agree on something.
Cheers,
