Who's on oil watch?

60 miles south of Dauphin Island right now.
This could be a major economic disaster. There is talk of closing the ports of Mobile and New Orleans should the oil reach the coastlines. Freighter ships and cargo ships, as well as regular-sized vessels cannot move over oil-laden waters. It creates safety issues concerning bilge pumps, buoyancy issues, as large vessels can become unbalanced on oil-laden waters.
For this board, long-term, however, is the fact that a hurricane barreling through this area in 2-3 months is going to spread that oil far inland, and lead to some kind of horrendous scenario. With an "extreme" season forecasted, there has never been a problem more under the gun since Katrina and broken levees. Time is not on anyone's side right now.
I would say that this has the potential to become exponentially worse than any disaster we've seen in recent history, and that's saying a lot. |
